Repair and Leasing Scheme

Wexford County Council’s Housing Department, in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, has just introduced a new initiative under which property owners can avail of substantial financial aid in return for making vacant properties available to Wexford County Council for social housing.
The new initiative is certain to be of interest to shop owners in Enniscorthy with overhead vacant accommodation which can be converted for use as private rented properties under Wexford County Council’s Social Housing Programme. Now seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from interested parties, Wexford County Council’s Housing Department is committed to paying, up front, for any or all repair work required to bring a property up to standard for letting in return for the property being made available for social housing through a lease scheme for a period of at least 10 years.
Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce is supporting this housing initiative and is recommending it to its members. There are, however, a number of requirements in relation to this scheme:
  • The property has to be vacant for at least 12 months prior to submission: proof of vacancy will be required.
  • There has to be a social housing demand in the area.
  • The property has been assessed as being viable to provide social housing.

Among the benefits of a long term lease agreement to the property owner include:
  • Guaranteed Rent.
  • Zero cost finance for repairs.
  • Avoid losing rent during vacant periods.
  • No dealing with tenants and day-to-day maintenance.
  • No need to collect rent or finding a new tenant.
  • Avoid advertising costs when seeking a new tenant.
With Wexford County Council’s Housing Department now seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ in the scheme (see accompanying application form), Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce is planning an information evening for early July when Housing Officer, Padraig O’ Gorman and other relevant personnel from his Department will be on hand to explain in detail every aspect of this very important initiative. Details of both the venue and time will be circulated in due course.
